This is a wonderful apple crisp recipe (with a make ahead mix) that comes from a Home Town Cookbook that the Ladies Fire Auxiliary put out in my home town years ago. It should be old-fashioned enough for you!
MIX: 5 cups flour 5 cups rolled oats 3 cups sugar 4 tsp. baking powder 2 tsp. baking soda 2 Tbsp. salt
Stir the mix well. Store in a tightly covered dish at room temperature. Stir well before using. Makes 13 cups.
CRISP: take 3/4 cup of the above mix 1/4 cup butter 1/4 cup sugar 1 tsp. cinnamon 4 cups sliced apples, peeled 2 Tbsp. water
Cut the butter into the mix until crumbly. Combine sugar and cinnamon then toss with apples. Place apples in a 8" square greased pan. Sprinkle oat mix over apples. Bake at 375 for 35 minutes or until golden brown.
This is best served warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream!
This recipe doubles well to feed a larger crowd. ENJOY!
