Red Velvet Cake

We also call this the Waldorf Astoria Cake, and it has been the official birthday cake in this house for years. Hope it is what you were looking for.

Sift together:
2 cups flour
2 Tbsp cocoa
1 tsp. salt
1 1/2 cups sugar

Add:
1/2 cup Crisco
1 tsp. vanilla
2/3 cup buttermilk
2 oz. red food coloring (I have always used 1 oz.food coloring and
2 Tbsp milk)
Beat well

Add:
2 eggs
1/3 cup buttermilk
Beat on high speed 1 minute.

Mix together:
1 Tbsp. vinegar
1 tsp baking soda

Stir gently into batter -- do not beat.

Pour into 2 greased (9-inch) round cake pans.

Bake at 350F for 30-40 minutes.
